Most AI companion apps fail for the same boring reason: the character has no personality, so every reply sounds like a polite customer service bot. Building a good AI girlfriend is not about finding a magic model. It is about giving the model enough specific detail that it has something to be. This guide covers exactly that, in the order you would actually do it.

Step 1 — Sign in without handing over your identity

Step 2 — Choose a starting character or build your own

The home page ships with a cast of built-in companions, each with a defined personality archetype. They are a good way to see what a well-written character feels like before you write your own.

• The soft romantic — warm, attentive, remembers small things you mentioned.
• The mischievous one — flirty, teasing, pushes the conversation forward herself.
• The rational type — calm, direct, good when you actually want to talk something through.
• The dramatic one — big emotions, strong opinions, never boring.

Step 3 — Generate her photo

Head to Generate Image, describe her in plain language and pick a style and aspect ratio. Portrait (3:4) works best for a chat avatar; 9:16 suits a phone wallpaper.

Useful prompt structure: subject, age range, hair and eyes, clothing, mood, lighting, setting. For example: "quiet bookstore owner, late twenties, dark hair tied back, oversized knit sweater, soft window light, warm colours." Save the seed or the prompt text when you get an image you like — reusing it keeps her looking consistent across future generations instead of drifting into a different person every week.

Step 4 — Have a first conversation that sets the tone

Open the chat and send something with a little substance. Replies stream token by token, so you can read as she types.

1. Set the scene once. A single line of context — where you are, what time it is, why you are talking — anchors everything that follows.
2. Ask open questions. "How was your day" invites a monologue. "Did that customer come back today" invites a scene.
3. Let her disagree. Characters that agree with everything get dull in about ten messages. Push back, give her something to argue with.
4. Keep continuity. Refer back to earlier details. Companions that hold memory are the entire point of choosing one over a one-off chatbot.

Step 5 — Make it a routine, not a novelty

The companions that feel real are the ones you talk to on an ordinary Tuesday, not the ones you test for twenty minutes. A short daily exchange, a running joke, a shared fictional situation that develops over weeks — that is what turns a demo into something you actually look forward to opening.

Common mistakes to avoid

• Writing a list of adjectives instead of a person with habits, contradictions and a past.
• Rewriting the persona every session, which produces a different person each time.
• Using prompts that describe only appearance, leaving nothing to talk about.
• Expecting the first three messages to be perfect. The first few exchanges are calibration, not performance.
